Why do you need a Boat Safety Scheme certificate?
The Boat Safety Scheme, or BSS, is a public safety initiative between the Canal & River Trust and the Environment Agency. The Scheme is designed to ensure, through independent verification, that boats meet the navigation authority’s minimum safety requirements. Its purpose is to help minimise the risk of boat fires, explosions, or pollution harming visitors to the inland waterways, the waterways' workforce, and any other waterways users.
You need to be able to demonstrate your boat complies with the Boat Safety Scheme requirements. You need to have a valid certificate to apply for the relevant annual water authority licence and insure your boat.
We will examine your boat in accordance with recognised Examination Checking Procedures and provide you with the necessary certificate.
What do we do?
We simply make sure you and your boat are safe. We undertake Boat Safety Scheme examinations and also carry out maintenance and repairs to ensure your boat complies with the certification requirements.
